I definitely went into this fast. I've been working in smaller increments and forgot to go in to really check the angle of the face. But the proportion and tilt of the head is off. Also the lips and the general face shape (which are rather bigger elements that are harder to change). I'm not really sure how to make it better from her as its so off. I'm thinking of just starting over?

Marina Abramović
“The function of the artist in a disturbed society is to give awareness of the universe, to ask the right questions, and to elevate the mind." - Abramović Nightsea Crossing (1981-1987) Heather Rose: An Account of 'The Artist is Present'In the atrium of MoMA, visitors were observing a woman in a long red dress sitting at a table. It was a blond wood table with blond wood chairs, as if it had come from IKEA. Opposite the woman in the red dress, a younger woman sat wearing a lightweight beige coat. The two women were gazing into each other’s eyes. Levin noticed white tape on the floor marking out a square. People rimmed this square. Some were standing, others were sitting cross-legged, and all of them were watching the two women at its center. Levin heard a small girl ask, “Mom, is that lady plastic?” “No, of course she’s not,” the mother replied in a hushed voice. “What is she, then?” the girl asked. “Mom? Mom?” The mother had no answer and her gaze did not leave the spectacle in front of her. Levin could see the child’s point. The woman in the red dress was like plastic. Her skin looked as if the floodlights had bleached her to alabaster. Suddenly, without any cue, the young woman got up and left the table. The woman in the long dress closed her eyes and bowed her head, but remained seated. After some moments a man sat down in the empty chair. The woman now raised her head and opened her eyes to look directly at him. The man had a crumpled face with untidy gray hair and a short hooked nose. He looked small opposite the woman. The two of them gazed into each other’s eyes. More than gazing, Levin thought. Staring. The woman did not smile. She hardly even blinked. She was entirely still.... read more Check out this Link to read more about the interactive piece 'The Artist is Present' 2010: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/marina-abramovic-inspired-novel-1425469 ThoughtsI love the idea of performance art. If I were to continue with my cinematography work, I would like to incorporate performance. I really like the idea of Abromovic's 'The Artist is Present' almost as literal way to "see into the eyes" and truly experience the artist. I think If I were to do performance it would have to be recorded and then incorporated into a video rather than in the moment presentation.
Haha I'm completely just going with it. I'm not sure what's up with the hair or if I like it? One of my challenges was to incorporate a 3D element...and this is what I came up with. It ultimately will have to be balanced by another 3-dimensional piece so I'm thinking maybe massive sculptural flowers?
So uh... its been a while since I've done drawing from a photo. Confession I for sure spent a week and a half choosing a photo. Last week I began penciling, and this week I went in with the conte. It is not right at all. I think I need to give myself more than thirty minutes because it takes me a while to get my bearings for this type of drawing. The angle is off completely. Will have to go back and fix it somehow.
Did the groundwork for the piece today beginning with my gestural figure. I want to get a little more definition for with neck and face area. I'm not sure exactly how to go about that whether I should find a reference photo or create my own reference photo. I will look into it a bit more. I really like my use of different viscosities within the acrylic medium and plan to play around with that a bit more. For now, I am rather excited with where my piece is going!
Final pieces put together at last. I ended up not being able to collect footage of as much pink-related things as I wanted so I had to compile the footage I had taken from the beginning of the summer. The goal was to sort of create just an "artsy" pink video, but I do not think that that was anywhere near accomplished haha. I think in the future I would do something similar again, but pay more attention to camera angles and the shots I wanted to get. I also ended up finishing the mural... it grew to encompass pretty much the entire side wall of our guest bedroom. I'm pretty happy with the left side, there was a lot of layering that I think adds some cool depth to the piece. Of course, if I were allowed, the piece would have some more sculptural, 3-dimensional aspects to it, however, in the future when my parents need to paint over it it needs to be flat haha. The right came out kind of wonky I think. The figure is out of proportion (can specifically be seen in the leg area). This year I really want to play more with the "raw" and "unfinished but finished" look. I like how the legs weren't filled out, and there is a lot of negative space in the piece. Ok so the plan was to collect videos that were pink-related over the entire summer and to have that done by August. I confess I have not found as many pink things as I want so I will have to come back to that. In the meantime, however, I decided to paint a wall. I sort of planned it out with a pencil I guess but mostly it was a 20 second gesture and then I went in with grey house paint and planned out my figure loosely following my gesture-drawing style. I like how the figure panned out. I want to see if I can do more on the wall in August as well, maybe add another figure or something. I really like the looseness and rather raw outcome of the painting though. When doing my gesture for this I realized it was rather big and that I couldn't do a whole figure. Maybe as an additional element to the piece I may go in and do another figure. Oh and of course I went in with some sparkles at the end.
Hmmm... so I made a funky pink cake? I want to try and do a video exploration of the theme pink. This past week I took some videos of my sister in the pink hat I made for our sculpture project. In addition I made a cake as well. Not really sure if the video will just be a mash-up of pink things that I find/stumble upon/make or if it will have some deeper content/storyline. Below is a very rough rough video of some of the cake shots. PSA: Oil painting is wack. I'm not sure I have a clear understanding of what I'm doing. In theory building up values should make sense, but the translation of that onto my canvas has been rather rough... we'll see. Below I both a reference photo of my still life as well as some general process pictures.
